Hi all, I have an announcement to make - been sitting on this for a while, my friend Dan Summers and I joined forces to come up with a t-shirt design to submit to TeeFury, and it got accepted! Dan came up with the idea, and I produced the art for it. Here's a preview of it - it is a mash-up parody entitled The Dukes of Hill Valley.
The sale date is August 30, but it will actually go up on TeeFury's site August 29 at 9pm Arizona time. This will be available for 24 hours only!

News Update - Comic Book, Sketch Cards, etc

I realized I haven't posted anything here in a while so here's an update - I've been working on a comic mini series for a while which will be published by an established comic book company. I'm happy to say the pencils are done (save a few tweaks) It is written by Michael Kogge (George Lucas Blockbusting, The Despotica for StarWars.com fiction) pencils by Dan Parsons (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars: Legacy for Dark Horse Comics) and myself, and colored by Chris Summers (I also did some coloring). Still not allowed to reveal much about it yet but I'm happy it's nearing completion! Will reveal more in the coming months!

In the last few months I finished work on sketch card sets for Topps including Star Wars Clone Wars: Rise of the Bounty Hunters and Star Wars Galaxy Series 6. I also did a base card for the Galaxy 6 set which I am very happy with. It's a scene that takes place in between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back and has been touched on in the early Marvel comics, but it was something I wanted to explore further. The set comes out in March so the art will be revealed soon!

Lastly I'm working on a new book cover for Black Coat Press for their continuing series of Lord Ruthven vampire novels, also illustrated by me. You can see the other titles here: www.blackcoatpress.com

My big announcement for the summer! I am one of the lucky people chosen to participate in Artists' Alley at Star Wars Celebration V being held in Orlando Florida, August 12-16 2010, and will be selling a limited edition print sold exclusively for the show.

My entry "The Clash of Lightsabers" will be limited to 250 prints and will be sold on 18" x 24" glossy paper.

Update on Galaxy 5

This past week the new Star Wars Insider magazine was released and includes a spotlight on Topps release of Galaxy 5 card set. "A Galaxy Not Far Away" features an interview with Topps editor David Waldeck, plus it shows a few of the artists' base cards - one of them being mine of Boba Fett fighting off the Stormtroopers. You can see it here at the bottom of the page! This was another pleasant surprise I didn't see coming! What's funny is this month the magazine centers around the Mandalorians (which will make an appearance on this Friday's Clone Wars) and talks of Boba Fett's origins, so it was perfect timing for my art to be shown!

Star Wars Galaxy Series 5

My latest news: Topps will be releasing their latest card set Star Wars Galaxy Series 5 early 2010. I will be doing sketch cards again (100 cards) but the big news is that I will have a base card included this time around! I almost had it accepted for Galaxy 4 but because of circumstances they could not fit it in - but good things come to those who wait!
As an added bonus (for me) they used my art on their sell sheet to advertise the set! This came as an unexpected and pleasant surprise to me and I am very grateful. You can see it here in the top left hand corner of Boba Fett vs. Stormtroopers in their concept design outfits (note the lightsabers). I will post a larger version when the release date is nearer.

The Empire Muggs Back

I recently was asked by Lucasfilm to customize a Mighty Muggs figure for their project "The Empire Muggs Back: A Mighty Good Cause" to be auctioned by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I decided instead of doing a character I'll paint a Star Wars scene from the movie - two scenes to be exact, one on each side of the character. One side is the scene of Luke outside his homestead on Tatooine watching the binary suns setting, the other is a view inside the Millenium Falcon cockpit as we see Tie Fighters attack the ship. These were displayed along with many other artists' designs at the Lucasfilm Pavilion at San Diego Comic Con last weekend! Have a look at the pics I took there.

Legend of Shallandra film update

It's been a while since I posted anything about my film so here are a few stills from a green screen shoot I did a few weeks ago. Since the trailer I put up a while ago I recast the main part of Kindra, now played by Erin Lanus. These are scenes from the final confrontation at the end of the movie. I gotta say that both Erin and Rich (playing Golgoth) here have done an excellent job, especially in the sword fight choreography, in which they are well skilled.

New Comic Cover - Wrath of the Titans!

Bluewater Productions and Alias Comics recently signed a deal with the legendary special effects artist Ray Harryhausen to publish comics based on his fantasy films. Harryhausen is best known for his stop motion animated monsters in films like The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans. Bluewater gave me the honor of doing a comic cover for one of those titles, Wrath of the Titans. The story is to be set five years after the events of Clash. This publication is set to be released April 2007.

Update on film progress

Okay, the film so far as been pretty slow in getting it together...but I've covered some ground. I have the main actors in place and so far they are doing very well. We have been working out some of the choreography for the swordfight and I have a couple of sequences done, more or less.

Also I have a rough teaser trailer, really just to give the viewer an idea of how the film is going to look. It includes some of the actual scenes to be used in the final cut, some that won't be used (like the swordfight, which will be redone) and a few storyboards here and there. There are also some effects shots in there which I am proud of...

Movie Project

For some time I have been making preparations for a short fantasy film I plan to shoot. I won't go into too much detail on the story, suffice it to say it is about a a girl who under circumstances has no choice but to go on a journey to save her husband and face a greater trouble that may turn her world upside down.

The film has been storyboarded, costumes have been made and props are ready to use. I have one actor in place but I am still searching for a girl to play the main role.
For the time being I'd like to share some of the storyboards that have been done for the film. I will continue to make updates as the film progresses.

Most Curious...

The animated feature Curious George was released in theaters last week with a weekend opening of $14 million, which as far as 2d animation goes is not a bad number. The company where I work (Fat Cat animation) had the honor of getting a contract to do a couple of sequences for Universal for the movie. My role in this whole thing was to paint the backgrounds along with a couple of other artists. It was a pretty hectic time, for some departments more than others but definitely worth it! So go see the movie and support the 2d animation industry, otherwise I will be out of a job!!! ;) Okay not really, but do go see it...heck, I haven't seen it myself! Must go this week.

Happy New Year!

I just completed all 206 sketch cards for the Lord of the Rings Evolution set. Man, these were more of a challenge than the Star Wars set...maybe because I had to draw more human faces this time whereas Star Wars has a wide variety of aliens and robots to choose from also. Just got back from Star Wars Celebration 3. Had a great time but man it was jam packed in there! I thought San Diego Comic Con was bad. Got to meet some of the other Topps sketch artists including Joe Corroney, Randy Martinez, Matt Busch, Sarah Wilkinson (Sarah's awesome), Cat Staggs, Cynthia Cummens, Justin Chung, Tommy Lee Edwards, plus many more. Thanks guys for being very supportive and all your encouraging words! I enjoyed talking to all of you.
George was there but the lines for him were way too long so I just skipped on that. On the other hand Rick McCallum candidly walked by in the hall and stopped to say hi to me and my friends! We shook hands and had our picture taken with him...a very cool moment.

Other news - though rather late news - my sketch cards for the Topps Revenge of the Sith set are out since April 2 and I'm already seeing a few on ebay. Really good feeling to see people are buying them. What's been even better is hearing from people saying they are a big fan of my work. Wow, that's feels really weird...
I will have some scans up soon showing my sketch cards, so anyone who's been waiting, don't worry they're coming!

An update on the Galactica book cover, it's been a while since I submitted my rough sketch for approval, so I called the publisher and well, the editor is currently on vacation...but I was told they are pretty sure it has been approved. I was getting worried for a while wondering if it was going to be approved at all. Anyway, I'm still excited about this project. I haven't had a Star Wars book cover/comic cover published yet but this is the next best thing for me. Wish me luck!

A bit more about me and my current projects...

Well you've probably already guessed I'm an artist. I work as a part time freelancer in role playing game products, book covers, trading cards, etc. I thought you'd be interested in hearing about some of my current projects. Following the sketch cards I completed for Topps publishing for their Star Wars Heritage set (see image in last post) they have asked me to do sketch cards for their Revenge of the Sith set coming out in April. I have been commissioned to do 200 cards which I just finished a week ago. A lot of work but fun! Unfortunately I can't post any just yet - not until I get an ok from the editor.

I am also working on a couple of painted pieces for Decipher cards for their 'Wars' series. These guys are serious about their product and I'm proud to be a part of it! But man, are there some talented artists working on this set. I have no choice but to raise the bar for myself.

Lastly, this is another project I'm pretty excited about - Ibooks publishing have commissioned me to do a book cover illustration for their next Battlestar Galactica novel. Not based on the new series...this one is a reprint of an old novel published during the original series based on the episode 'The Gun on Ice Planet Zero" (the one when they land on the snow planet, remember?) but the original title was called "The Cylon Death Machine" which is a much better title I think. So far all I've done is rough sketch for which I am waiting approval from Universal before I'm given the go ahead. It's been a couple of weeks since it's been submitted, hopefully everything is going okay!

Anyways January was definitely not a bad month for work. Can we keep this up??
